Garden
Arthur Kramer Elementary School 7131 Midbury Drive This garden was given an honorary name, the Jonlyn Mitchel Garden, to remember a former Kramer principal, at its dedication on November 23, 2002. For its Kramer project GICD has received funding from Les Dames d'Escoffier (click to see story about the garden) and has worked with teachers, neighborhood volunteers, and the students to create a sustainable garden. The cover story of Growing People News 8.2 describes how this garden was built with the help of many supporters and volunteers. This garden has a wonderful bricked central area with a gazebo. An area of plots to the west are used by classrooms and students, while an eastern set of beds are used to demonstrate good gardening practices and to grow food to donate to a local food pantry. A more natural area of native plants, small trees and shrubs, still in progress, surrounds the garden. A group of picnic tables are popular for lunch time and school parties. This garden is a work-in-progress, and over the summer some new plantings, structures and beds will be added, including a small Rose Garden.
